Now backs to basics! Something falls into the forest, and this episode sees the first of Mulder’s one man missions to find out what’s going on. Deep Throat’s back with the information (which came from the Air Force) and once again Mulder gets pictures but they are later erased by ‘da man’, and Mulder gets taken prisoner by the military…again.

The pair are then dragged before their first disciplinary hearing at FBI central, and Deep Throat seems to have mixed loyalties when questioned as to why the X-Files wasn’t shut down with ‘Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”. Mulder seems to make a friend from NICAP who are rather impressed with his work, however poor old Max doesn’t last very long – for he disappears.

This is the first episode to introduce the typical stereotype UFO ‘nut’, later to become an X-File icon. Scully’s gun moment: chasing Max out of Mulder’s motel.
